Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation literally means an increase in pigmentation. It can occur as generalized darkness or as patchy blemishes.

  1. Melasma – It is a common skin problem affecting mainly the face. It occurs as patchy blemishes over cheeks, nose, forehead and upper lips.
  2. Tanning – It is generalized darkness of the face & body caused by sun exposure.
  3. Sun Spots
  4. Freckles
  5. Skin Diseases – A number of skin diseases can lead to darkness of face & body. They can be diagnosed by keen observation, dermoscopic evaluation and biopsy.

They can be:

  • Lichen Planus Pigmentosus
  • Ashy Dermatosis
  • Riehl’s Melanosis
  • Toxic Melanosis
  • Acanthosis Nigricans
  • Macular Amyloidosis

Treatment

Treatment of Hyperpigmentation is done according to the cause and diagnosis. Depending on the problem you have, it is treated with a combination of depigmenting creams and oral medicines. Sun protection is of prime importance in all hyperpigmented disorders.

 

Some conditions can further be improved with the help of chemical peels & lasers.
